More than 100 St John Cymru Wales volunteers will be on duty this week as the Welsh capital hosts the world’s biggest sporting event of 2017, the UEFA Champions League Final.
As the nation’s leading first aid charity, St John Cymru Wales has been contracted by the Football Association of Wales, and other organisations, to be an official provider of medical care.
St John Cymru Wales first aiders, nurses, doctors, paramedics and ambulance crews will be at venues across Cardiff, including:
• UEFA Women’s Champions League Final, Cardiff City Stadium – Thursday 1st June
• Football Village, Cardiff Castle – Friday 2nd June
• UEFA Champions League Final, National Stadium of Wales – Saturday 3rd June
• Champions Village, Cardiff Castle – Saturday 3rd June
• Football Village, Coopers Field – Saturday 3rd June
• Cardiff Central train station – Saturday 3rd June
• Splott Market, coach drop-off/pick-up point – Saturday 3rd June
Chief Executive for St John Cymru Wales, Keith Dunn OBE, said:
“We are a trusted provider of first aid cover at sporting events like the Six Nations and we are proud to be part of the Champions League Final – the biggest event Cardiff has ever hosted.
“St John Cymru Wales volunteers will be making a significant contribution – clocking up an impressive 1,750 hours between them – as 200 million people tune in to watch the event around the world.”
National Events Manager for St John Cymru Wales, Ian Simpson, said:
“We will have 125 volunteers based at key locations making sure people stay safe as they experience this exciting event.
“Our volunteers will be clearly visible whether football fans are at the stadiums, supporter villages or making their way home through Cardiff Central.
“St John Cymru Wales is proud to be working in partnership with the Football Association of Wales and other key brands like Heineken and Uni Credit.”
Local Organising Committee Project Director for the UEFA Champions League Final at the Football Association of Wales, Alan Hamer, said:
“An event of this scale requires a trusted source of medical support which is why we have chosen St John Cymru Wales to be an official medical provider, working across multiple locations in the Welsh capital.”
St John Cymru Wales volunteer, Rhiannon Bartlett, 18, said:
“I’m really excited to be part of the Champions League Final. I’ve been volunteering with St John Cymru Wales for 5 years and this is such a fantastic opportunity.
“I’ll be based at the National Stadium of Wales ready to provide my first aid skills should they be needed.”
